Why is Progesterone Testing and Why Does It Matter?

Progesterone Testing is a method used to time proper breeding and better predict depict. Since dogs deliver 63 days after ovulation, knowing the exact day she ovulated will make the process smoother. Progesterone testing is inexpensive, easy and safe. Additionally, when using outside stud dogs or AI it is essential to getting the timing perfect.

Can I Use Progesterone Testing to Test When My Girl Will Go In Heat? 

No, as the chart above indicates, the hormone does not rise until immediately prior to ovulation.


I am interested in using Shipped Semen/AI. When do I need to start testing and what am I looking for?

Typically you begin testing your bitch 5-7 days after her bloody discharge is noted. Once tested is begun, you typically test every two-days (or every other day, depending on level) until the target result is reached.


What is the target number?

The target number will vary depending on what inseminate procedure is planned and which type of test is utilized. See the below breakout information and chart.

  • Natural Breeding (Live Cover) - once the dogs level is above 8 ng/ml. Begin placing the dogs together. Experienced studs may be less enthusiastic until higher numbers are reached.

  • Chilled Semen (Shipped/AI) - Need to know both when the progesterone has risen above 15 ng/ml and insemination usually occurs closer to 21 ng/ml.

  • Surgical Insemination (Frozen) - Once the progesterone has risen above 35 ng/ml. This is the “last chance” to breed.

Can Progesterone Testing be used to determine pregnancy?

No, regardless of whether the bitch is pregnant or not, the progesterone continues to rise for the next 63 days.
