Meet Crush

Crush, a black Standard Poodle puppy from Valaurah Farms, posing with a UKC Best Puppy in Show ribbon after a successful show weekend.

Crush is an absolutely stunning young Standard Poodle bred by our friend Jackie at NCR Poodles. And, amusingly enough, I never actually planned to bring him home. When Jackie mentioned that she was looking for a show home for him, I jokingly said, “Oh, well, I’ll take him.” I wasn’t really being serious. Apparently, Jackie was. My friend Serina was headed our way for a dog show, picked Crush up along the way, and delivered him to me the very next day.

He was only eight weeks old, but the reaction to him was immediate. Everyone who saw him stopped to look. People raved about him, and there was this overwhelming feeling that this little black puppy was going to be something special. Before he had ever stepped into a show ring, people already knew Crush was going to be a star.

Even his name happened somewhat by accident. My friend Kim was set up beside us at the show with her Doberman, Crush. I was talking about how I still hadn’t settled on a name for my new puppy when I heard her talking to her dog and thought, “Ohhh… I like that.” Crush he became. His registered name, NCR’s Taking on the Jellies at Valaurah’s, came later and was inspired by Finding Nemo, when Crush the sea turtle tells Dory that she was “taking on the jellies.”

It did not take long for Crush to prove that everyone’s first impression of him had been right. During his puppy show career, he earned multiple Group 1 placements, Best Puppy in Show wins, and Reserve Best Puppy in Show wins across UKC, AKC, and IABCA. When he moved into regular UKC competition, he earned 85 of the 100 points required for his championship and all three required competition wins during his very first weekend out as a class dog. He finished his UKC Champion title the next time he was shown and has since earned two of the five competition wins required for his UKC Grand Champion, including wins at the Western Classic against some of the top Standard Poodles on the West Coast.

His AKC career has been equally exciting. Crush finished his AKC Championship before his first birthday with very limited showing and is now working toward his AKC Grand Championship. At his very first show as a Special, he was awarded Best of Opposite Sex for a four-point Grand Champion major. He is currently working toward both his AKC and UKC Grand Champion titles while also beginning training in Rally, Obedience, Nosework, and NASDA.

At home, Crush is every bit as entertaining as his show career is impressive. He is extremely playful, easygoing, wonderful with kids, and very social. He is also extraordinarily vocal when he plays and has absolutely no hesitation about sharing his opinion with everyone around him. Intelligence is occasionally a work in progress — Sir Squirt isn’t always the quickest member of the household to put the pieces together — but he keeps trying, figures things out eventually, and makes us laugh constantly along the way.

From the beginning, Crush has been one of those dogs people remember. He has the kind of presence that catches your eye immediately, but what makes him special to us is everything that comes with it — his playful personality, easygoing nature, willingness to work, and the sheer amount of fun he brings into everyday life. I have enormous plans for this boy’s future, and with everything he has already accomplished at such a young age, we are really just getting started.
